Curitiba is in an area with a special type of forest called the Ombrophilous Mixed Forest. This forest has many Paraná pines. These trees are called Araucárias (Araucaria angustifolia) and are protected from logging. The city has a botanical garden and greenhouses that grow many native and exotic plants. Curitiba also has many purple and yellow ipês (flowering trees) that bloom in late winter. The yellow ipê is a very common tree in the city.
