 The city of CURITIBA

Brazil’s “green” city

Brazil’s “green” city, Curitiba, has long been recognized for its commitment to mass transit and innovative urban planning, much of which dates back to the 1970s.

As the nation’s eighth-largest city and the capital of the state of Paraná, Curitiba is also remarkably diverse, with residents of Polish, Italian, Jewish, and Japanese heritage. Though not traditionally marketed as a tourist destination, the city is well worth an extended visit for its parks, architecture, and groundbreaking efforts in sustainability. At its heart lies a truly elegant botanical garden, surrounded by a network of clean, well-maintained green spaces. Amidst this greenery, a charming historic downtown district features striking Art Nouveau and Neoclassical buildings, standing in contrast to the towering modern high-rises.

Curitiba also serves as a perfect base for exploring the surrounding region. To the west, monumental sandstone rock formations create a dramatic landscape, while to the east, coastal rainforests and pristine surfing beaches beckon.

Since the 1970s, Curitiba has set itself apart through forward-thinking urban management. Its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system—widely regarded as a model for public transportation—has inspired cities worldwide. This visionary approach extends to the city’s strong commitment to sustainability, evident in its carefully designed parks and ambitious recycling programs that actively engage the local population.

Blending innovation, environmental consciousness, and cultural richness, this Brazilian metropolis offers a unique vision of urban development, where modernity and nature exist in harmony. Whether for a short getaway or a longer exploration, Curitiba continues to captivate visitors with its art, sustainability, and breathtaking landscapes.
